Spice girls going to India

I saw the headline in the newspaper today, the entertainment section. Something about the Spice Girls going to India. I thought "Yeah right, that'll never happen. The Spice Girls don't go south of the Equator."

I read the article, and it turns out it wasn't actually about the Spice Girls. It was just a play on words.

It's nice to see that there are still jokes to be made about the SGs!

Remember that disasterous date I went on a week ago? I just discovered, thanks to the power of Facebook, that she's a fucking fence-sitter. Thank goodness everything happened as it did, after all.

No attractive pop stars!

It occurred to me today: There seem to be very few genuine attractive female pop singers these days!

Years ago, male pop fans had plenty of choices, from Thaila and Becky (AllSTARS) to Kym Marsh (Hears'Say) to Charli (Hi-5). Now it seems that the only attractive pop stars are Miley Cyrus and the ever-present Kylie. But Kylie is 40 and Miley is 15 - and I'm no Annie Leiberweitz pedophile.

I tried looking up photos of Operator Please, but then I realised "Hey, I don't like their music or their songwriting, and I don't find the girls appealing, so why the hell am I looking up photos of them?"

I do actually like the group Alphabeat, but it's difficult to find their MP3s on BeeMP3 CDs in stores.

Maybe the extraordinary lack of attractive girls of pop is why I've been obsessing so much about Amanda Bynes.

Sydney White finished downloading today

Yay, it finally finished downloading while I was at work! I've just watched it, and Amanda is really really good in it. It's a cross between Revenge Of The Nerds and Snow White, done in the style of an Amanda Bynes movie.

My favourite bit was when Amanda looked cute and hot, which I guess doesn't narrow it down :-D

Nah but seriously, it was well worth the shocking amount of time required to download it. I'll definitely buy it on DVD; it really was a hoot!

In one scene, they clearly show a Macintosh getting hacked. What's hilarious is that Apple actually provided the computer specially for the movie - they should've looked at the script before loaning the machine!

In other news, on Ten HD today there was a documentary about the timescale that our bodies work on. They showed some scientists who were clearly running Linux or Unix. It looked like either an early version of Gnome or maybe IceWM, with four LCD monitors!

The documentary, and the knowledge that my computer was sitting idle at home, gave me the idea to get one of the distributed computing projects. After a lot of deliberation ("Which will be more beneficial to people? Does it matter if this one doesn't support multiple cores?"), I decided on Folding@Home, the uniprocessor edition. I think I enabled big work units - according to my calculations, that's 8 hours just to do one work unit, and my processor is incredibly fast per core.

I'm an hour and a quarter overdue for bed, so I'll leave it there for now. See you all later.

One thing to admit

I must admit that I like the song "4 Minutes", despite the fact that I loathe Justin Timberlake, Madonna, and Timbaland. I mean, I *hate* these people, yet I think their unholy union has produced a good song.

I'll probably find that, as usual, Madonna has ripped off a Mylene Farmer song. It's just that I'm having difficulty finding a place to download Mylene's latest single.

I couldn't find 4 Minutes in any CD stores I checked in tonight, and I've only managed to get a hold of an unreliable torrent and a streaming copy at a ridiculously high bitrate (defeats the purpose of "streaming", doesn't it?)

I hate Spice Girls fans

The Spice Girls fans were great. They were always the first to use new Internet technologies, they treated eachother well, and they were collectively afraid of nothing. They outfitted their computers with video digitisers in order to capture and share TV appearances by the Spice Girls, they listened to the radio for hours on end just to record an interview; they spent literally hundreds of hours scanning in press photos. All for their fellow fans.

They were like that. But it's been years and years since those days. When the Spice Girls decided to temporarily go their separate ways, the organisation of the fans broke down. Fans left and new people, who had previously been on the fringe of the community ("dyke spicers", as well as people with concealed motives) became more powerful; they basically overran the rest of the community.

That's when they started to push me out of the online fan community. I was part of the more traditional group of fans, and I told it how I saw it. Call me Mister Paranoid, but I think the new bastards stored information on people who they didn't like.

There is still a kernel of fans who keep the old spirit alive - tonight I was thinking about "Stop to the top" which is one of the most ingenious plans I've ever heard, cooked up and executed by Spice Girls fans. It used new-ish internet technology in a way that nobody had ever thought of before. It failed because of lack of communication, and the lack of communication was caused by the original breakdown of the fan network anyway. But the spirit was there.

So, I hate the Spice Girls, and I hate the Spice Girls fans as they currently stand. Even though they've been in this dreadful state for many years, I hope by golly that they find their way and once again become the greatest fan community of all time.

A reply

I got a reply to my message, so I posted another, more subtle jab.

No replies yet on the "Mission Accomplished in Canada and Iraq" yet, but there are 9 views of it - there must be plenty of people thinking but not knowing what to say.

Someone also posted a link to a Youtube clip of Mel C doing a backflip onstage in Canada. I replied with "It's not the first time she's done a backflip this tour". Heh. I can't believe I'm the only person thinking of these zingers.

What the Spice Girls' announcement is like

Imagine that your friend in Sydney had leaky valve in her heart, and would die without an operation to fix it. However, the operation itself could be fatal. Still, she decides to go ahead with it; it is scheduled for two months' time.

You immediately ask your boss for some time off so you can go and be with her; because after all, if the operation goes wrong, you'll never see her again. Your boss agrees, and you schedule a flight out to there.

But then, two weeks before you are due to leave, your boss becomes remarkably silent on the topic of your trip; in fact, in one conversation you overhear, he says "IF" you go to Sydney.

Finally, just over a week before you leave, he says that you can't go to Sydney next week because he wants to take some time off. He wants to take his niece on a fishing trip, so you'll have to work.

Whether or not you immediately quit that job would depend on how much you needed a job. But you'd be furious, and SO sad, and if you stayed in the job you would try desperately to cancel the airline tickets... and maybe you can't.

That's what it's like to be an Australian Spice fan, except that quitting your job and going to Sydney anyway isn't an option.

If it was a genuine "family committments" reason, it would be easy to reschedule the other tour dates - I mean, they hadn't even been rescheduled after the extra US concerts were added. If the kids have to go back to school and Victoria wanted to be there, simply reschedule for during school holidays. Easy-peasy-lemon-squeezie. None of this "Who knows what the future will bring" bullshit.

But they didn't. They've gained a quick inflow of cash and a quicker inflow of publicity for themselves. They can now go and do whatever solo projects they want and be guaranteed sales. Or rather, Mel C can. Disgustingly, her fans are sticking by her, even though this is obviously her fault.

The SG Defender 1 Rule: When a group breaks up, the former member who launches their solo career first is the one who broke up the group.

Well? The rule extends to cancelled tours: When a group cancels a tour, the member who releases a press statement saying "It's not my fault" is the one who caused the cancellation of the tour.

Mel C did that. Even though the tabloids unrealistically blamed Mel B as well, she hasn't said anything. Mel C knew that she was an obvious target for blame, so she immediately put her fans back onside by saying "I really wanted to continue the tour".

How disgusting. Her fans do believe her, even though the last 9 years tell a different story.

Early signs of trouble in paradise

An interesting message posted on Tuesday January 29 - days before the announcement that the rest of the Spice Girls tour was going to be cancelled.

I asked them to issue a statement regarding the Rest Of The World tour...

Dear Richard,

Thank you for your email. Your request has been noted.

Unfortunately we cannot release this information through email. The best
place to find all the latest announcements regarding the tour can be found
on http://www.thespicegirls.com. If the tour does go to Australia, it will be
announced on the website first.

Sarah

Then "Mysterious" posted:
that's the scary thing about your e-mail... it's still in the "IF" status?

Then "Xeriffe" posted:
its more like they are saying If not to throw their image on a trash bin like, if they say they wont be going now, while the tour is still up on north america, is worse than cancelling the other dates after this leg ends. Both ways are a very very nasty way to do that. They should have cancelled the dates back in october. bitches.

Then "Xmariano" posted: I think you've nailed it. That's exactly what they're doing, they will wait until they are done with the USA to minimize the press backlash. Bitches.

So it looks like the news was virtually bursting out of the seams of 19 Management, and a handful of Spice fans got wind of it days before the announcement.

Bitches.

The Legend of Spice Girls Fans

People are right to get upset, and angry. It's also natural for the fans to want to call names.

Long-time Spice fans have stuck with the girls through thick and thin. Back in the old days, we were verbally abused and some of us were spat on (like me) or beaten up (like others) simply for liking the Spice Girls. In our spare time, we talked about the Spice Girls, made websites about the Spice Girls, digitised TV and radio appearances and put them online. This took up a lot of spare time.

We also kept smiling even through worrisome stories from the tabloids that mostly ended off not being true; as well as media types constantly having a go at the group.

In 1998, they said that they'd release a new album in 1999. All through 1999, they said they'd release an album at the end of the year. Eventually, with very little promotion, they released it at the end of 2000. And it was so terrible. What a let-down.

Still, we stuck with the Spice Girls, even though they split up without announcing a split. Many of us even supported all their solo careers for a while. We tried to keep the Spice fan spirit alive for six years. Some people even spent a lot of money continuing to collect Spice merchandise.

The Girls often said, individually, that if they did another tour that they would tour Australia.

Finally, they reunite and announce another tour, including Australia. We dust off our union jack dresses and platform shoes (well, not me, I'm a bloke!) in preparation. Many of us buy the white, black and box-set GHs, as well as the Headlines single. Once again we spend a lot of time and money voting for the Girls on chart radio and TV shows, although this time through SMS rather than through actually calling.

Most importantly, we plan our lives around this event that we've been waiting a decade for.

We even tolerate the tour dates being descheduled in favour of more shows in countries that they have already performed in, even though it has destroyed the plans we made that we probably can't change any more. We still stay loyal to the Spice Girls after years of being taken for granted, simply because we love the Spice Girls and know that the rewards for fan-dom are better than than the problems.

And then they pull the rug out from under us.

It feels literally like a kick in the stomach.

Spice fans are finally letting their frustration out, and I suspect that they are firing at the correct targets. After all, Simon Fuller knows how to manage a band; he kept S Club 7 together for such a long time even though they were all utterly miserable by the end :-)  The Spice Girls weren't together again for long enough, nor hard enough under the pump, to have to "get out" of the tour.

My fellow fans, let fly with both barrels and you will feel better. It won't bring the tour dates back, but we need the release. Also, if you don't want to participate in the frustration-shedding, please don't try to stop those who want to. We all need support at a time like this, for many hearts have been broken.

I'm sure once the dust has settled, many things will have changed in the Spice fan community. We'll probably lose a lot of faces too, which will be very sad. But I'm sure eventually we'll reach a new stability and somehow keep the true spirit of Spice alive.

I feel your sorrow.

Spice Girls Setlist - predictable exclusions

Today I finally had a look at the setlist for the Spice Girls tour. What's missing?

Quite simply, what's missing is tracks from their third album "Forever"! Sure, they sing Holler and Let Love Lead The Way (sans Geri), but they don't give the album tracks from Forever any sort of outing whatsoever. We haven't heard any of those except Right Back At Ya sung live, and it is the most recent album, so it would make sense to sing a couple of those rather than sing Spice Up Your Life twice and sing a selection of the lowest-charting solo singles.

But they won't do it. There's a curse around that third album. The Girls do understand to an extent why Forever didn't sell well (unlike Last.FM who reckon it is because there wasn't much promotion, and that fans were "disappointed" when there were no more singles off Forever). But they don't seem to understand that it was the first 4/5ths of the album that stunk, and that there was actually a good song among the rest of the album.

I'm talking about Oxygen. Wouldn't that song have been lovely toward the end of the concert, with just strings and no percussion until the second-last chorus? It's also quite easy to sing, which is always a plus when you don't have very much time to rehearse in :-)

Although I'm disappointed that the Girls don't want to sing Oxygen on tour, I would rather they stay away from Forever's non-singles than run through the majority of that unspeakable tracklist.

Mis-spoken sentences

I had to read this sentence a couple of times until I realised what she actually meant:

"the genocide in darfur is being helped so much by harry potter fans, and i decided to do my bit too, by donating US$9..."

Harry Potter - turning kids toward witchcraft, and actively assisting in genocide! :-P

In other news, the Hairspray song "Come So Far (Got So Far To Go)" has been nominated as best original song in the Satellite Awards. Congratulations, hope it wins!

Headlines video is pretty boring, don't you think?

I'm watching the DVD of the Spice Girls Greatest Hits. I saw the video for "Headlines" yesterday. It strikes me how the Headlines video is comparatively boring and uninspired.

Wannabe: Done in one take (actually not, but it's been made to look that way)
Say You'll Be There: Sci-fi theme with the Girls taking on characters (Geri was "Trixie Firecracker", Emma was "Kung-Fu Candy" etc) and throwing various metallic weapons.
2 Become One: Everything going in superspeed in the background
Mama: Home videos - some presumably true, some faked.
Who Do You Think You Are: Nothing really unusual about this one
Spice Up Your Life: Bleak ("disutopian"?) sci-fi theme where the Spice Girls are the dominant force of the world. Trivia: one of the things you see on the video screen, "Spice Wars", was actually an anti-Spice-Girls animation created by a Spice hater :-)
Too Much: Each of the girls is in a totally different movie genre - Mel B from sci-fi, Emma is supernatural, Mel C from Kung-Fu movies, Geri from WW2 period, Victoria from spy films (?). Plus clips from their own movie. Visually very striking - lightning, explosions, etc.
Stop: Not very striking or memorable, except that it seems to be set in the 1960s in a small town. They go to a county fair.
Viva Forever: The most striking and memorable video the Spice Girls have done - probably one of the most memorable and puzzling of all time. It has a fairytale theme with two children going on an adventure. Check it out on Youtube if you haven't seen it - it's a beautiful piece of video art. I can't really describe it any further, because the story is puzzling and slightly disturbing. Trivia: Debate raged for years as to whether it was two girls, or a girl and a boy. I'm sure Spice fans are still debating whether the Spice fairies in the video were good or evil.
Goodbye: Mel B wearing a strange hat is interesting enough :-)  But seriously, the Spice Girls go into this mansion and discover frozen people inside. Toward the end of the song, the people start thawing and coming back to life. It reminds me of an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation. It's another memorable video.
Let Love Lead The Way: Each of the Girls represent elements. But they really just sing the song.
Holler: More of the "elements" theme, but really just singing and dancing.
Headlines: You just see them singing the song. Alarmingly, you only see them together in the same shot for the first 20 seconds of the video - once the song kicks in, they are only ever shown individually or in twos. Makes it look sorta like the launch party for Forever :-)  I shouldn't laugh, as it's not exactly inspiring confidence in their ability to stay together if they barely even appear together in the video.

But you see what I mean? So many Spice Girls music videos were interesting, with more going on than just the song. Headlines is the third video in a row which hasn't had anything going on *but* the song. And I've now heard the song "Voodoo" - first impressions are that I don't like it.

Oh, and I can't access the damn extended "Golden Ticket" part of the CD on Linux. I should probably boot up into Windows. (Co-incidence that "Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory" was on TV last night?)

Gotta head into the city today

I just read on the Spice Girls website that their Greatest Hits album has been released in Australia - it was released yesterday (I was working yesterday).

So it looks like I'll be going into town for the 2nd time this week to buy the album!

(Reminder to self: Join up with the other Spice fans online again so I can keep properly up-to-date).

I like "Headlines".

It's a bit different, it's a bit unusual, but I do like the new Spice Girls song Headlines. I was initially disappointed that the former Fan Network hadn't managed to get a copy of the song and put it on the internet - well, they actually did. I gave my former colleagues too little credit. I have just listened to a low quality version on Youtube, and I do definitely like the song.

Don't get me wrong - lyrically, it's a little bit weak. But it's got a nice feel to it - sort of a cross between the Spice Girls of old, and "Let Love Lead The Way" (the only good song ever produced by Darkchild).

I just wrote "Who produced Headlines anyway?", then it occurred to me to go onto Wikipedia to look it up. And guess what? Richard Stannard and Matt Rowe produced it! For those who don't know, that duo produced most of the Girls' hits. Thank god the Spiceys have seen the light and hired Stannard and Rowe once again. And this explains the slight R&B feel, as Matt Rowe did a lot of R&B tracks.

In the first iteration of this post, I criticised Rodney Jerkins and co for ruining the Spice Girls' third album. But I deleted all that part of the post, as I don't think it's fair to have a go at someone whose career and possibly LIFE has been completely ruined by the events in question.

Whoa deja vu!

I just had a look to see if the new Spice Girls single was available online yet (no? Where's the famous Spice Fan Network when you need it?), and a headline caught my eye.

Thursday 11th October, 2007. "Westlife: There's no war with Spice Girls".

Waddawhat? Aren't they reporting that story about 7 years too late? As it turns out, no. In a startling coincidence, Westlife and the Spice Girls are both releasing albums on the 7th anniversary of their bitter chart war. Apparently, the Girls have now moved the release date of their album to avoid a war. They must be remembering that they came off second-best last time.

Kian Egan from Westlife described the Spice Girls as "running scared" (dickhead) and described Mel C as "not having anything nice to say about anybody" (stating the obvious). Mel C says that she's "now a fan" of the Spice Girls. A bad-weather fan, obviously; since back when she actually had a solo career she was anything BUT a fan of the SGs. Now that her entire solo career consists of some second-rate songs and about 50 fans in Denmark, she's the world's biggest fan of the Girls.

iTunes Music(?) Store

Today, my $50 iTunes Music Card arrived from LG. I went onto the site and tried to think of things that I might want to download.

Here's what I downloaded:

1. What Time Is It (High School Musical)
2. The Big Dollhouse (Hairspray Broadway Cast)
3. Without Love (Hairspray Broadway Cast)
4. Do You Believe In Magic (Ally & AJ)
5. Walking On Sunshine (Ally & AJ)

What Time Is It was good; I'd heard the song before, but it's pretty good so I downloaded it. I decided to download The Big Dollhouse because all the poofs who didn't like the 2007 Hairspray movie reckoned that song should've been in it; and Without Love so I could hear a bit more of the cast.

I was very underwhelmed.  Without Love is supposed to be one of the high points of the movie / play, yet it sounded very lacklustre on this version. And the accents of the characters were annoying - I'd rather watch Kath & Kim for a few hours than watch this cast performing the entire musical.  The Big Dollhouse wasn't anything to write home about (hey, I'm writing home aren't I?). It was funny in one place, but it allowed me to listen to Harvey whatshisname's interpretation of Edna; in particular, his voice.

Horrible! Didn't sound like a woman, didn't even sound like a transvestite. In fact, his Edna voice is a dead-ringer for Mr and Mrs Bighead from Rocko's Modern Life. So much so, in fact, that I've just done a Google search for "Hairspray Rocko's Modern Life" to see if it pulls up that information. Instead, it pulls up a page on Zac Efron which says that his favourite cartoon was Rocko's Modern Life. Spooky or what?  :-)

While I was looking around the music store, there was an ad or something for the Ally & AJ album; I had remembered my old mate Ronald Traino posting about how he'd met them once and was a fan of theirs, so I decided to download two tracks and see what they are like.

I should've been warned by his recent post that he likes Mandy Moore, but anyway I downloaded those two Ally & AJ tracks. Disappointed. The first song (highest popularity rating on iTunes) wasn't very impressive. With the second song, Walking On Sunshine, the girls made it sound like they were walking in mud.  Come on, it's a bubbly, energetic classic, not a freakin' ballad!  I was extremely disappointed. This is equal worst rendition of this song that I've ever heard. Equal to a girl who sang at a Glory game once, where when she did the "Walking on sunshine, whoa-whoa" bit she hit about 5 wrong notes.

I went over to the Audiobooks section, and there was a particular audiobook about Macintoshes that was listed literally 12 times on the front page. Possibly more. Halo effect, my arse.

Why High School Musical sounds "Autotuned"

I have figured it out!

I watched the rest of HSM last night, still annoyed and surprised by how Autotuned their voices sounded. When the last song "We're All In This Together" come in, I thought "Gee, that sounds higher in pitch than I have heard it before".

A quick check against the official music video on the DVD confirmed it, and I realised why all the singers had sounded massively Autotuned.

Part of the reason is that they HAD, of course. But the film was made for American TV - 30 frames per second, and the video standard here in Australia calls for 25 frames per second. To get the 30fps video into 25fps, you have to SPEED UP the video, hence the reason why the voices sounded high to me.

If the video wasn't sped up, the movie would blow out to 105 minutes.

The reasons why it is not more readily noticed are:

  • Most American stuff we get on DVD isn't musical.
  • That which is, is shot onto film, and film is 24 frames per second (very close to our 25fps)
  • Most people are not musical, and therefore don't notice differences in pitch (my first draft had a description of these people which was less nice :-P)

In short, I'm not worrying about the DVD transfer of Hairspray, as that was shot directly to film, and undergoes almost no speed change to get it to 25fps.

What a disappointment.

I bought the DVD of "What A Girl Wants" on Wednesday. The movie whose poster made me interested in Amanda Bynes. Oh yes. But I never saw the movie until last night.

What a shocker. Sorry to the movie's fans, but it was meant to be a comedy, and it simply wasn't funny. A cross between Girls On Top 2 and The Princess Diaries.

Oh sure, as a family drama film it was quite good. But comedy? Not at all. Such a shame, as Amanda usually has a great sense of humour... this movie didn't deliver.

Jennifer Peterson-Hind (US Hi-5) has released a single called "Good night tonight". It's very much a country song, unfortunately; which means it's really not my bag, baby.

Tonight I'm going to watch Mr Bean's Holiday again.

Review: AllSTARS - AllSTARS

I just downloaded the AllSTARS album from the iTunes Music Store. Putting aside the guilty feeling I always get when buying a license for the playback of music from one of those DRM-infested stores, I started listening as it was downloading.

Tracklist wise, I was a bit surprised. I'd always thought that the album was actually called Starstreet – named after the show these guys were on. Strike one for me. I'd assumed that “Funkey”, “Rock This House”, and their excellent cover of “Love Cats” would be on the album. Strike two for me – they weren't.

The album starts with their biggest hit, “Things That Go Bump In The Night”. When I say “biggest hit”, I mean that it got to number 12 in the UK charts. Yes, the reason why AllSTARS isn't around anymore is because of incompetent artist promotion that was rife in the first couple of years of this century. Kudos to the AllSTARS Street Team, who did get that single up so high on the charts.

TTGMITN is very similar to those Max Martin songs – you know the ones, where the backing is meant to sound tough, all the boybands as well as Britney Spears did these songs. But hey, it's a good start to the album, and although it's dated it's a very catchy song. If you've got the soundtrack for the Scooby Doo movie, you'll already have this song.

Next is “Land Of Make Believe”, which is a fantastic cover of the Bucks Fizz song. A great song, unusual choice, and of course who can forget Thaila's corset in the video? (Unfortunately, too many people remember them badly miming the song on Top Of The Pops – naughty naughty!)

After Kylie's song “Can't Get You Out Of My Head”, everyone seemed to go nuts about Cathy Dennis as a songwriter. Suddenly, this nearly-forgotten singer became everyone's favourite writer, and worked with S Club and Rachel Stevens. She also wrote “Back When”, which is track 3 on AllSTARS. This song was the flop that broke the record deal for the group, and although it isn't really too bad a song, the middle eighth juts out of the song like a sore toe. It's not as bad as the middle eighth in the Spice Girls' “Weekend Love”, so I hope that reference gives you an indication.

A couple of tracks on this album make me think of Absolute, but they seem not to have been written or produced by Absolute. I can't find out though, because iTunes only puts composer names into the files, not producer names. “Love Is” and “Train Of Thought” are those sort of tracks. Actually, Love Is has a hilarious line: “I'll solve your problems, I can wear the hat”. Wear the hat? Someone please tell me what on earth do hats have to do with solving problems!

“Happy Ever After Endings” is a cheerful song... well, the backing is, the lyrics sometimes aren't! Lyrically, this song is a bit of an enigma.

The double-A-side for the Back When single, “Going All The Way”, is pretty weak; it really sounds like a B-side. Backing-wise, it's pumping! But the rhymes are simplistic and a bit like what I'd expect from Hi-5. Amazingly, I'm not the first person to have compared Hi-5 to AllSTARS. True.

The most memorable part of “You Got It Bad” is the little reference to You're So Vain - “you probably think this song is about you, don't you”. Enjoyed. Very catchy song.

“Tearing Up The World” was actually co-written by Tracey Ackerman, who did backing vocals for some Steps songs! Speaking of these sort of songwriting cameos, “You're A Fool” and “Butterflies” have Andrew Frampton as co-writer; and “Once Upon A Lifetime” has Simon Ellis, who from memory was in the Spice Girls live band in 1998?

Tearing Up The World is another catchy song, and Butterflies has a sort of early 90s feel with great chords; but You're A Fool is stupid and weak; Allstars gone R&B. It sucks arse. Skip it. If you're downloading the album, don't bother downloading this one.

Another little surprise in store for me on this album. They put 3 ballads in a row. Four, if you count Butterflies as a ballad, which I don't; but I understand if you do count it as a ballad. “Once Upon A Lifetime” sounds suspiciously like S Club's “Two In A Million”. But it's nice in its own right. I know a guy in India who likes these sort of songs, so I'll send him this song! Heck, I'll send him the whole album to get rid of my guilt at buying DRM tracks :-)

“Lost Without You” is quite forgettable. I'm not sure if it bears resemblance or anything, but it reminds me of the later part of Atomic Kitten's second debut album.

“Greatest Love Story” is actually quite good, once you get used to it. Ashley does a spoken bit, with Sam doing the Darkchild-like noises in the background :-)  For those of you who haven't seen the TV show, Becky had a crush on Ashley, so this is why Becky sings the main part and Ashley does the spoken. At the end of the song, I always expect Ashley to say “Can you give me back my toothbrush? Give me my toothbrush, Becky!”, which was how the song ends in that particular episode of the show. You've got to see it to get the joke.

“Train Of Thought”. I think I mentioned it earlier, as one of the Absolute-like songs. But yeah, it's very catchy.

Is there something I should know? No. This is another cover version – I think the original was by Depeche Mode or some group like that. I hate it. Not AllSTARS' fault though, as my beef is with the lyrics. The original line says “You say you're easy on me, you're about as easy as a nuclear war” which is so pretentious. “Hey, look at us, we're deep and complex and political because we talked about nuclear war in a song!”. The lyric has thankfully been changed for AllSTARS' cover, but whenever I hear the new lyric I can't help but think of the original line. The whole song is dumb, anyway. It's just a pity that it's the last song on the album!

However, I downloaded the version with the remixes on the end. Don't bother downloading the version with the remixes. The Almighty mix of Land Of Make Believe sucks arse. The syncopated nature of “Best Friends” makes it difficult to remix, and although Almighty do better it's still not that great. The Xenomania mixes are crap too. I've got a confession to make; I haven't actually finished downloading. I've still got the Is There Something I Should Know Mothership Remix to download.

So, should you buy this album? Yes. If you're a real fan of pop music, you'll really enjoy AllSTARS' album. I did. And who knows, since Scooch and the Spice Girls have had comebacks lately, maybe AllSTARS will be the next group to reunite? We can hope!

7.5 / 10
